Movie review of Cold Pursuit (2019)

In 2016, Hans Peter Molland directed a Norwegian language film called Kraftidioten or also called In Order of Disappearance starring Stellan Skarsgard. And in 2019 he remakes the film in the English version with the title Cold Pursuit and starring Liam Neeson.

As a remake, the Cold Pursuit movie has the exact same plot and almost doesn't offer anything new, but at least this revenge film is able to present dark comedies that are more often targeted to attract bitter laughter from the audience than the original film.

Neil Coxman (Liam Neeson), yes, "Coxman," is the best citizen in the snowy city of Kehoe and works as a snow cleaner on the highway and the owner of the company. His normal life in a small town was disrupted by the death of his overdose son. Knowing that his son was not an addict, Coxman was hunting down responsible people in the snow-covered area. Then be " Cold Pursuit ."

For a film of revenge, Cold Pursuit does not always focus on the story of revenge efforts full of sadness, anger and the battle of life and death of the main character. The film has a different approach, namely bandaging the revenge story with dark comedy. As a result, the Cold Pursuit movie was like laughing at the life for a life that had been lost due to revenge.

As a remake directed by the same person, of course, Cold Pursuit will retain its trademark, namely the names of characters that are magical and seem to be eccentric. The main character was named Neil Coxman who was "remake" of Nils Dickman.

Then there are some members of the mafia drug dealers who have weird nicknames. Starting from "Speedo" such as the brand draw, "Limbo," to "Santa" because he looks like Santa Claus. Every character is killed, the film will display the nickname and full name of the bodies complete with their respective religious symbols on a black background like a final tribute.

Because there are quite a number of those killed, then this "respect" then becomes a repetition that seems funny. It's like respecting and laughing at death itself. Typical dark comedy. Like the dark Coen Brothers comedy film, the Cold Pursuit film also presents funny decisions and coincidences that arise due to chaos from the main character's actions.

Neil Coxman's revenge is like a rock falling in calm water that makes its surface rippling. This makes the plots unpredictable of course if you haven't watched the original film because the plot is actually the same. Then, what's the difference between Cold Pursuit from the original film? Hans Peter Molland knows the weaknesses of his film and fixes it on Cold Pursuit with the success of making his comedy darker more on target.

Then, if the In Order of Disappearance raises the issue of crime in a prosperous country like Norway, then Cold Pursuit raises the issue of Indian race as an indigenous American nation. Review the Cold Pursuit: If you want to compare the strengths and weaknesses of these two more or less the same films, the cast performance of Cold Pursuit is still inferior to the cast of In Order of Disappearance, especially Tom Bateman who plays Viking, the film's main antagonist.

Like the Norwegian version, Cold Pursuit also tells about the loss of fathers for their sons. Both those who were killed and divorce and Tom Bateman were less able to attract sympathy as a father who threatened to lose his son. Another disadvantage of this film compared to its predecessor is the decision to use the CGI in several scenes that make the cinematography far inferior.
